Internationally, our sustainability journey began in 2020, in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. Because the beauty of nature is precisely what has made Fleurop-Interflora what it is today, we saw it as our duty to protect nature as much as possible.
This led to the development of a sustainability agenda, to which 24 other European countries, alongside Fleurop-Interflora Belgium, committed themselves: ‘Committed to a better world’ was born!
In this sustainability agenda, the following four steps are continuously followed:

Following a thorough international materiality study, this resulted in an ambitious action plan focusing on the following four areas of work:

GHG & Net zero right
Melting ice caps, periods of extreme drought followed by flooding… Climate change poses one of the greatest threats to our planet and to the floriculture sector, which is closely linked to nature. By gaining a better understanding of our impact on the climate, we can work step by step towards more sustainable processes and lower CO₂ emissions, with a view to achieving our Net Zero targets in the long term.

Packaging left
Flowers are a truly beautiful product; they bring people together and instantly create a sense of well-being and positivity.
But at the same time, they are also very fragile, which means that a great many packaging measures have to be taken throughout the supply chain, resulting in significant waste streams every year.
By reducing waste and making materials for packaging, transport and the processing of flowers more sustainable, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact.

Sustainable procurement right
With millions of flower stems processed by our sector every year, the responsible sourcing of flowers plays a crucial role in making our supply chain more sustainable.
Particularly when it comes to imported flowers, a joint approach involving growers, importers, exporters, suppliers and florists can achieve a great deal.
By making conscious choices when purchasing flowers, we encourage a more transparent and fair supply chain that benefits everyone.

Pesticides & Plant Protection Products (PPPs) left
In recent years, there have been numerous news reports about pesticides and PPPs, which have raised concerns among consumers. But what exactly are they, are they found on food products, and what about exposure for florists and consumers?
Based on scientific research and recommendations from Columbia University, we have contributed to a safety policy regarding the use of these substances.
In this way, we are helping to create a safer working environment for everyone who comes into contact with flowers.

Florist Certification Program right
Maximising our sustainability efforts at head office is one thing – but what about our 265 members, each and every one of them wonderful local florists who, with passion and craftsmanship, translate your message into a beautiful bouquet?
In 2025, in collaboration with GFS, we effectively launched our pilot for the Florist Certification Programme.
A sustainability initiative that supports our florists with information, training and guidance, enabling them to take concrete steps towards more sustainable business practices with a focus on the environment.
