In addition to an international sustainability agenda, which Fleurop-Interflora Belgium has also committed to, we decided in 2023 to make a commitment at a national level as well.
With years of expertise in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and knowledge of ESG as a framework for measuring sustainability efforts in companies, the VOKA Charter for Sustainable Entrepreneurship (VCDO) was therefore a logical step for us.

In the first year, the focus was primarily on mapping out our own activities. This involved carrying out the necessary studies within Scopes 1 and 2 to assess our own carbon footprint, setting up internal sustainability initiatives, and placing a strong emphasis on our packaging policy.
The journey that flowers take from grower to consumer was also mapped out in order to identify stakeholders and partners.

In the second year, we focused primarily on sustainable IT and our website. We looked into how we could manage data storage, page loading, UX optimisation and frameworks as efficiently as possible.
We also looked at digital inclusivity to identify specific areas for improvement, taking the WCAGs (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) into account as much as possible.
Finally, we conducted a thorough analysis to determine how we could maximise the integration of sustainability into our new site.

During year 3 of the VCDO, the focus was primarily on the Florist Certification Programme. A pilot scheme was rolled out involving 20 florists from 5 countries, to assess how we can best implement sustainability measures among our members.
In addition, efforts continued to roll out a loyalty programme, conduct research into fine-mesh logistics, and foster internal ownership of small-scale sustainability initiatives.
At our wholesaler Prunus, too, the first steps have already been taken to make the entire product range more sustainable, step by step.
