Why do scented roses have a shorter vase life than unscented roses?

With highly scented roses, often heritage or English varieties, much of the rose’s energy goes into rapid flowering and producing a strong fragrance. As a result, these roses tend to open more quickly and fade sooner. For commercial reasons, growers often favour rose varieties with a longer vase life, sometimes at the expense of fragrance.
