Sustainable funeral flowers
Yes. In a funeral bouquet, the flowers are tied together rather than arranged in floral foam, automatically making it a more sustainable option. However, the flowers themselves should also be grown and handled sustainably. If they have a high carbon footprint, your funeral bouquet will of course no longer be as sustainable.
No. If you want a 100% sustainable funeral arrangement, it is best to avoid floral foam (OASIS), as it contains microplastics. In recent years, however, significant progress has been made to make floral foam more sustainable than traditional green floral foam. For example, brown BIO floral foam is available, which is more easily biodegradable, as well as alternatives to floral foam such as OASIS® TerraBrick.
Absolutely. You can choose where your sustainable funeral flowers are delivered: to someone’s home, to the cemetery or directly to a funeral home. During the ordering process, make sure to include all the necessary delivery details in the comments.
Several factors determine whether some funeral flowers are more sustainable than others. For example, you can choose a funeral bouquet instead of a funeral arrangement, opt for seasonal funeral flowers (Florist's Choice), request delivery with eco-friendly packaging or no packaging at all, and choose to have your message written only on a flower card rather than on a funeral ribbon.
With sustainable funeral flowers, it is of course important for the packaging to be as sustainable as possible. Plastic or cellophane packaging should therefore be avoided. Keep in mind, however, that many eco-friendly alternatives look very similar to plastic while being fully compostable.
Unfortunately, yes. Microplastics can spread through soil, water and air, which means they can also be found on plants and flowers, as well as on fruit and vegetables.
