Not necessarily. The sustainability of flowers depends on many factors, including the carbon footprint of growing and transporting them. This in turn depends on how greenhouses are heated and lit and how the flowers are transported. Under certain conditions, a locally grown rose can therefore have a lower carbon footprint than a rose flown in from a country such as Kenya.
There is no single answer to this question. The sustainability of a flower bouquet depends on many direct and indirect factors related to each individual flower, including how and where it is grown, seasonality, storage, processing and transport. It is the combination of these factors that can make one bouquet more sustainable than another.
Opinions differ on this. Just like fruit and vegetables, flowers may have been treated with plant protection products against pests and diseases. If you want your compost to contain as few pesticide residues as possible, it may therefore be better not to compost cut flowers if you do not know how they were grown.
In terms of vase life, there is not necessarily a difference between sustainable and other flowers. Depending on the variety, growing conditions and care, cut flowers can stay fresh for anywhere from 5 days to around 3 weeks. Seasonal flowers are often a good choice because they are grown when natural conditions are more favourable, which can contribute to both their quality and sustainability.
Not necessarily. Seasonal flowers may require less energy to grow and can therefore have a lower carbon footprint than some flowers grown out of season. They are also available when growing conditions are naturally favourable. However, origin, growing methods, packaging, storage and transport also play an important role. A seasonal flower is therefore not automatically the most sustainable choice in every situation.

To enjoy your flowers more sustainably, start by maximising the vase life of your bouquet. Place it in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, draughts and ripening fruit, which releases ethylene. Every three days, clean the vase with an environmentally friendly product, replace the water and trim the stems. Remove individual flowers as they fade. Some flowers can then be dried and, depending on the variety, you may also be able to collect seeds or take cuttings.
